Active Directory Federation Services
Also known as: ADFS
Active Directory
ADFS is an on-premises federation service that issues security tokens for single sign-on. It was the original way to extend AD identities to cloud applications before cloud authentication matured.
Why it matters
ADFS is now an internet-facing attack surface and operational burden. Migrating its applications to Entra ID authentication and retiring the farm is one of the highest-value identity projects available.
